The thought of this community without boat racing is simply inconceivable!
Having grown up in Madison Indiana, I feel that the race, and our boat is part of my being. This is truly a major sports event that fairly well goes unnoticed every year. There have been boat races on the Ohio River since the early 1900s.
I have been going since the age of 6 with my parents and now as an adult. Most fun you can have and for cheap. Always something fun to do on the river. Rides,fireworks,parade,games,food,great music, and family fun and the racing is absolutley amazing. I follow every H1 race on the circuit every year but Madison is still the best by far.
Boat races aren't really my thing, but this one seemed popular.
The tiny community of Madison, Indiana fields an unlimited hydroplane known as Miss Madison which has been sponsored by HomeStreet Bank of Seattle for the past several years, and has won three straight national championships, yet not many people in the state of Indiana know. Our boat is more popular in Detroit, Seattle, San Diego, and has raced in Doha Qatar! However most people in nearby Louisville, Indianapolis, and Cincinnati have no idea what a hydroplane, let alone Miss Madison, is!
My younger son said to me last summer at the Madison Regatta/Indiana Governor's Cup race why more people didn't come to the event. He made a good comparison between the unlimited hydroplanes and Indianapolis car racing. The unlimited hydroplanes are truly one of the great spectacles in the racing world. They use jet turbine engines or World War II Rolls Royce engines from Spitfire fighter planes. They race at 200 miles an hour over the Ohio River in a true spectacle of power and Grace.
